NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell (1930-2016), the sixth man to walk on the moon, believed that aliens in UFOs monitored the world during the Cold War because they wanted to help prevent nuclear war.

Mitchell shocked many of his professional colleagues in NASA when he claimed during a 2016 interview with the British tabloid Mirror Online that benevolent aliens worked to save humanity from a nuclear holocaust.

He said aliens intervened during the Cold War to prevent the U.S. and the U.S.S.R from firing nuclear missiles at each other and incinerating millions of their helpless citizens.

Mitchell, who died in February 2016 at 86, was the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 14. He spent hours walking on the lunar surface in February 1971 with Alan Shepard, the first American in space.

Aliens monitored nuclear weapons test sites

According to Mitchell, aliens have taken an increasingly active interest in human affairs since the U.S. conducted the first test (codenamed Trinity) of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945, at the White Sands Missile Range in the Jornada del Muerto desert, New Mexico.

He told Mirror Online that extraterrestrials detected the explosion and became concerned that humans had developed the capability to wipe out life from Earth.

Mitchell claimed that senior U.S. military personnel said they detected the presence of alien UFOs around nuclear weapons test sites. The aliens appeared to be trying to find out what humans were up to.

The insiders allegedly told the former NASA astronaut that aliens tried to sabotage test detonations. They also often disabled test missiles and sometimes shot them down after launch.

Aliens monitored missile bases to prevent nuclear holocaust

Mitchell alleged that he spoke privately with many people in the military and intelligence communities who admitted that the U.S. government was aware aliens were concerned about the prospects of a nuclear holocaust and wanted to prevent it.

Air Force officers stationed at U.S. nuclear missile sites also told him the skies above the bases swarmed with UFOs.

They reported sighting UFOs hovering overhead during tense moments of the Cold War when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. appeared to be on the brink of unleashing a nuclear holocaust on humanity.

Mitchell told Mirror Online that he believed aliens monitored test sites and missile bases to assess U.S. military capabilities. They also wanted to stop humans from starting a nuclear war.

He believed that aliens wanted to help preserve global peace.

Mitchell accused governments of UFO coverup

During an interview with Dateline NBC in 1996, Mitchell accused the U.S. government of concealing information about aliens visiting the Earth in advance spacecraft.

He claimed that top officials confessed that the U.S. government was keeping dead alien bodies recovered from crash sites such as Roswell, New Mexico.

Mitchell also alleged that some alien species shared technological secrets with the government.

Paranormal Papers reported that Representative Tim Burchett from Tennessee alleged that the U.S. government may have been covering up alien UFO visitations since the Aurora incident in 1897.

Veteran astronaut’s sensational claims received a skeptical reception

Mitchell’s claims that aliens worked behind the scenes to prevent a nuclear holocaust received a skeptical reception.

While his theories gained support among members of the UFO conspiracy theory community, many of his professional colleagues derided them.

However, a few former members of the U.S. military came forward to support Mitchell’s theory about aliens secretly overseeing human affairs.

For instance, former Air Force base officers Bob Jacobs and Robert Salas shocked Americans during an appearance on the Larry King show in 2008 when they claimed that aliens interfered with nuclear missile systems at Air Force bases and caused them to shut down.

They alleged that the military hushed up the incidents.
